The Inverness Architects’ Association (IAA) heard the full illustrated story to date of Achabeag at its conference in Strathpeffer on 9th November.

Ardtornish’s Hugh Raven had a 40-minute slot to outline the vision, planning history, design principles and progress to a sixty-strong audience of professional architects – who were kind enough, in their feedback, to describe it as ‘excellent’, ‘very interesting’ and ‘inspirational’. The IAA programme for the day can be seen by clicking on the link.

Having declined an invitation to last year’s IAA conference – as there was then much less to say – Hugh covered the history of the once 89-strong community at Achabeag, its clearance in the 19th century, the planning justification for the new settlement, the higher-than-usual level of affordable housing, and the design of the first inspiring buildings.

He was also delighted that the IAA expressed a strong interest in visiting Achabeag during 2013.
