Roderick James Architects

Established in 1974, RJA LLP works from locations in Glasgow, London and Devon, and has set up an office in Morvern. The practice specialises in contemporary architecture with a particular emphasis on space and light.

They’re especially known for their close association with Carpenter Oak Ltd., and the design of timber frame buildings. They work nationwide, and have worked in the Channel Islands, Ireland, France, USA, South Africa and the Caribbean. With their experience of designing several hundred individual houses, they’ve developed a language and style of structure more subtle than it first appears, giving their buildings a comfortable contemporary feel.

Roderick explains “We believe there should be a return to a more responsive style of building. We’re aiming to put more fun and informality back into buildings – trying to avoid the stereotype square room, square corner, but providing an efficient thermal envelope with dramatic spatial quality. Virtually all our buildings are one-off designs for individual clients, and we rarely seem to duplicate work we’ve already done.”

Pat Borer, sustainability consultant and Architect for the new WISE building at the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth, has also been to site and is actively involved in the design process.
